I Love/Hate to Travel: Weekend Writing Warrior

PictureSunrise at the airport
Hello! Welcome to my Weekend Writing Warrior post. Thanks for joining me and I hope you enjoy my eight sentences about a traveling misadventure.

The boat finally pulled up to a scruffy-looking dock and Tara scrambled out of the craft, never so happy to see dry land in her life. She was so delighted to be standing on firm ground she paid little notice as Marshall hauled their luggage out of the boat and the vessel departed.

When the sound of the motor totally receded, the sudden stillness snapped her to attention. She was alone, on what looked like a deserted island, with a strange man; a very strange man. Not far up a path she saw a small house and behind that, she could make out another one-story structure and what looked like an outbuilding. Other than that, there was nothing in view except nature.

Island fever set in and Tara had the overwhelming desire to jump up and scream for that demon boat to come back and get her. She would happily vomit all day to return to civilization.

Look at this beautiful sunrise! I took the picture at the airport as I headed out to visit my family. I love/hate to travel, much like my heroine, Tara. Love the adventure, hate being away from all the conveniences of my home and sometimes out of my comfort zone. Like Tara, I've also tossed my cookies riding in a small boat and don't care to repeat that experience.

Read more about Tara in Her Wild Protector, available now in a box set at a great price!

I wouldn't mind being on an island like that. I guess she should go to that house and see if anyone's home. Nice details and I liked the sunrise pic too!

Peace and total quiet for awhile does sound nice, right? Thanks for stopping by, Frank.

Great snippet! Very funny and with great details. I love the "very strange man". Sounds like the vacation from hell.

I love very strange men. They're the most fun! Thanks for stopping by, Alexis.

Well I know I came into the middle here, so it all seems a bit ominous to me, although I love islands myself. Can 't wait to know more! Really an effective 8.

I love islands too, Veronica. Tara is freaked out because she's all alone with this odd guy here, but of course, it turns out well. After an exciting day or two! Thanks for stopping by.

Uh-oh. Sounds like she's headed for trouble, especially with that "very strange man." BTW, I would like to see a tiny bit of description of that "scruffy" dock. Was it falling down? Slimy? Rotted? Did it smell like dead fish?

Oh, nice point, Sandra. I should have expanded on that dock. Thanks for the idea!

Lots of information packed into there. "...rather vomit all day long..." That definitely conveys her strength of conviction about that thought! :-)

One thing jumped out at me--using the word "so" twice in close succession. "...never so happy..." and "...so delighted..." . It kind of diminishes the effect. Much more powerful when used sparingly. :-)

Good 8 :-)

You're right, Teresa, about the word 'so'. I looked at that paragraph many times and it didn't jump out at me until I posted here! Thanks for your comments and for stopping by.

Well this is interesting...you've got me wondering why she got on the boat in the first place, and who this strange man is to her. Calling it Island Fever before she's even been there for more than a moment seems a bit strange to me, as I feel like that usually takes a bit to set in, but I get the idea you're trying to convey : ) You have me asking questions and wanting answers, good job.

Thank you Millie. I was hoping to tease and tempt with this portion. It's kind of hard to take a few lines out of context and grab a reader's interest, so this was a challenge, for sure.

Hey! You've definitely piqued a little interest here; if she doesn't like the guy and doesn't want to be on the island, then what's up? Is this some kind of a punishment or coercion to keep her out of the way?

Mwa-ha-ha! Okay, I'll tell a little more. She's being hidden away by the good guys because the bad guys are after her. Right now, they all look like bad guys to Tara, especially after traveling on a boat that made her seasick.
