I do many things well, but sewing is not one of them. I can manage to fasten a popped-off button and patch a hole now and then, but real sewing is not my forte. Recently, my cat tore the bed sheet. Those little back claws are sharp! Frugal woman that I am, I attempted to save the item and sew the hole together. I like the sheet set and sure didn't want to throw it away. Alas, my stitching didn't survive the washing machine. It was time for professional help, so I took it to my tailor. That's right, I have a tailor. She and her husband have a small shop nearby and she is my miracle worker. She's done everything from patching blue jeans to making lovely panels for a divider screen. She looks at me, puzzled when I bring in clothes to be mended. You can't sew? she asks. No my dear, I can't. I don't have a machine and I have very little desire to use one. Every now and then I think how cool it would be to make my own clothes, or even to alter or embellish clothing. Then the urge passes. Look at this great job! This would take me hours to do, even if I did have a machine. Would I rather spend $8.64 for a patch that will hold for years, or buy a new sheet set that would cost over $100? I may not be able to sew, but I know how to find excellent help.
