The Sand Drift Aikido Doc Ryu Dojo Martial Arts Center teaches fundamental and advanced Aikido in both traditional and street self defense variations. We have a well rounded martial arts program that includes defenses against armed and unarmed attacks and weapons training. The study and practice of Aikido sharpens hand eye coordination, increases strength, power, and flexibility, while providing its practitioners with a practical means of self defense. Training takes place in an environment of safety and courtesy. The practice promotes discipline, confidence, and physical and mental health and well being.
Aikido is a distinct martial art in that it concentrates on blending with the energy of an attack in order to redirect and subdue the attacker. The ideal result is to control conflict with minimal harm. For this reason Aikido techniques are used by law enforcement agencies and is taught to special military divisions. The essence of Aikido is to achieve a harmonious link between one's body and mind through practice leading to the ability to defend against aggression using the least amount of force to render the aggressor powerless. Since many Aikido techniques are derived from the sword, members of Doc Ryu Dojo train with various weapons including the Bokken (wooden katana "sword"), Jo (staff) and Tanto (knife) . Through training, the student learns important concepts of movement, breath control, timing, distance, and extension that lead to greater understanding of self defense while providing key principles underlying the essence of Aikido. Ancient traditions of respect, Japanese etiquette, and Japanese language are maintained and practiced by the students. The Sand Drift Aikido lineage is one of the oldest in the Southeastern United States established by the late Dr. H. T. Walker sensei, 6th degree Black Belt-IAF. Students of Dr. Walker Sensei continue to teach the ancient arts of Aikido as passed down through the lineage from Morihei Ueshiba. Sand Drift Aikido Doc Ryu Dojo continues the tradition of cooperative training enabling all students to grow in a healthy environment where theory and practice become one. We are proud to have Randy Beck, Sensei, 4th Dan (Black Belt) as the chief instructor at Doc Ryu Dojo. Beck Sensei has been studying Aikido since 1979 and trained under Walker Sensei from 1986 to 2003. All instructors are of Dan rank (black belt) and many have various backgrounds in other martial arts. Please join us during our normal hours for a demonstration and tour of the facilities.
